Transport Team Leader

Your new role

You will be responsible for the day to day operation of the driving teams , ensuring all customer needs are met in an efficient, safe and compliant way. Proactively lead by example and provide direct management of the driving teams whilst supporting the onsite Management Team.

What you'll be doing

Think Customer

● Support the overall CDC operation, with accountability for all customer deliveries

● Work in partnership with the warehouse operations team to ensure efficient inbound of supplier deliveries and outbound delivery customer orders

● Ensure consistently high standards of customer service is delivered by your team at all times, in line with the DFS customer promise and operational excellence

● Ensure customer expectations are met through efficient operations and people practices, including managing absence, holidays, banked days and overtime

● Ensure daily vehicle debriefs take place at the start and end of the shift, taking responsibility for the team's Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) use, monitoring and improving On Time / In Full (OTIF) delivery stats, and ensuring customer NPS feedback is reviewed and shared with the team

● Support the Transport Manager with accident management and property damage investigating and reporting.

● Accountable for optimal utilisation of transport fleet for store to customer e.g. optimisingload volumes per store

 

Aim High

● Lead your team by example and ensure high standards are continually maintained

● Lead, coach, develop and motivate the team through all aspects of their individual roles

● Support the Transport Manager to ensure high standards of vehicle compliance are maintained at your site

● Responsible for vehicle check completion, defect logging, in-day vehicle tracking, gate checks and general vehicle standards

● Responsible for full auditable compliance on vehicle and trailer maintenance, truck downloads, driver time directives etc

● Maintain high standards of Health & Safety and housekeeping compliance in the warehouse and company vehicles

● Organise and prepare for timely delivery of changeover stock to stores and ensure adequate support is provided in store on changeover days, in line with the plan agreed with the stores

 

Be Real

● Lead the recruitment of drivers and delivery colleagues, conducting interviews and proactively providing feedback within SLAs

● Ensure all new starters in the transport team receive a great induction using the standard driver induction guides and work closely with the Transport Manager and fleet team to ensure essential vehicle compliance is delivered and understood, along with the general employee induction

● Review your teams performance, providing regular feedback to ensure their performance is as expected, identifying improvements and creating training plans where necessary

● Work with the Transport Manager to ensure team cover is sufficient for peak and busy periods, proactively planning hours and holiday allocation for your shifts

● Proactively manage absence, responsible for completing return to work conversations with your team members, supporting their wellbeing and working with HR to access support where needed. Ensuring thorough records are kept for fact finding to support instances of high absence

● Proactively manage people issues with appropriate support from the HR team and the Transport Manager

The role is for you if...

Desirable to be fully conversant with the Transport Law governing Driving Hours

● Transport CPC qualified or committed to working towards this qualification (to qualify within agreed period post appointment)

● IOSH Health & Safety qualification preferable

● Excellent customer service skills

● Operational management, planning and scheduling skills

● Professional conduct at all times

● Smart and presentable appearance at all times

● Proven experience of people management

● Experience of encouraging great performance and managing poor performance as required
